During the Amsterdam Light Festival, which is held in December and early January, the canals of Amsterdam are lit up by the best light artists from Holland and abroad (see Amsterdam light festival map). You can enjoy the best works and art installations in Amsterdam inner city for weeks. Every year, Amsterdam city center is lit up by dozens of innovative and high quality light art installations from (inter)national artists during the Amsterdam Light Festival. Since 2012, the Amsterdam Light Festival has realized over 200 art works, growing into one of Europe principal light art festivals. After the opening, part of the works created specifically for Amsterdam become part of a permanent collection that travels around the world.
The light sculptures, art pieces and projections are installed from the most part along the Amsterdam canals in the old town as its mentioned in Amsterdam light festival map. They are there only for the duration of the festival. And you can take a walking route along these art pieces. It is called The Illuminade. A nice walk but sometimes crowded. Another option is to take a boat ride in the Amsterdam canals where the light sculptures are placed. This is called The Water Colours. A very interesting experience with the light reflections on the water surface. This one should not be missed.
The yearly Holland light Festival attracts international artists and visitors from all over Europe (see Amsterdam light festival map). Amsterdam Gay Pride is a yearly local LGBT parade of boats in Amsterdam canals, held on the first Saturday in August. The Gay Pride event is a frequent source of both criticism and praise. The annual Uitmarkt is a three-day cultural event at the start of the cultural season in late August. It offers previews of many different artists, such as musicians and poets, who perform on podia.
